When we talk about gear, you can choose between more DPS overall or survivability and more resilience. Whatever you pick, you need to combine spell power, haste and resilience as your main stats.
BIS balanced gear should be:Main Set: Full Wrathful, also you can pick Shoulders of Mercy Killing if you are not hit rating capped.
Neck: Wrathful Gladiator’s Pendant of Subjugation
Wrist: Wrathful Gladiator’s Cuffs of Alacrity
Feet: Wrathful Gladiator’s Treads of Alacrity
Waist: Wrathful Gladiator’s Cord of Alacrity
Weapon: Bloodsurge, Kel’Thuzad’s Blade of Agony
Wand: Wrathful Gladiator’s Wand of Alacrity
Back: Wrathful Gladiator’s Cloak of Subjugation
Offhand: Wrathful Gladiator’s Compendium
Trinket 1: Dislodged Foreign Object
Trinket 2: Charred Twilight Scale
Ring 1: Valanar’s Other Signet Ring
Ring 2: Ashen Band of Endless Destruction
But also, you can adjust your gear. It depends if you play battleground, arena 2v2, 3v3…You can also use some mana trinkets and rings in different setups like Solace of the Defeated.
ENCHANTS AND GEMS
Now, I’m showing you my gear without Wrathful main parts with all enchants and gems.
I’m using some PVE items so I can get more haste and crit because it’s unplayable with 1.8 second cast on Frostbolt and no crits.
I find it more useful to enchant my weapon with Black Magic which has a chance to increase your haste by 250 for a period of time. Later when you get Wrathful, you can have enough haste and change it for 63 spell power.
Same with the engineering glove enchantment, Hyperspeed Accelerators, which give 340 haste for 12 seconds. There is never enough haste for frost mage.
On the belt, use engineering’s Frag Belt enchant. It can be useful in some rotations. Engineering’s Nitro Boosts for PVP and BGs. You can’t use it in arenas.
Like I said, you can switch items as you wish. I sometimes use the Talisman of Volatile Power trinket for crits and some 400 haste(only problem is that the trinket isn’t passive). Of course, there are no better trinkets than those 2 I mentioned in the BIS list.
PRIORITY STATS
Hit rating: 5%
Spell power: 3050+
Haste: 1100+
Resilience: 1050-1200
Spell penetration: 135
Also, haste MUST be your priority at start. There is no point chasing 3k spell power and having Frostbolt at 2.0 second cast time. You will not be able to cast 1 spell, so haste is a must on low gear.
You can try getting less resilience but there is no room for mistakes. Also, I would say don’t go below 850. You will end up getting one shot from huntards. In arenas, you shouldn’t go under 1050 resilience.
TALENTS & GLYPHS
I’ll show you my 2 talent builds with some differences.
First one is a build with some damage improvements. I chose Permafrost 3/3 only because of the healing reduction. You can go ⅔ here if you wish.
You can also go ⅔ on Piercing Ice but I went 3/3 because of full damage potential in this build.
Shattered Barrier is an extremely useful talent in 1v1 fights against melee classes.
Brain Freeze is a good talent but 10% and 15% is not something you can really rely on. If it procs, your burst becomes really sick.
Torment the Weak 3/3 for max DPS and Improved Counterspell are a must on this arcane tree.
Major Glyphs:
Glyph of Evocation
Glyph of Polymorph
Glyph of Ice Barrier
Except my glyphs, you can also choose these two:
Glyph of Icy Veins
Glyph of Blink
Minor Glyphs:
Slow Fall
Fire WardFrost Ward
SECOND TALENT BUILD
This talent is the main difference between the 2 builds. When you have 5/5 on Arctic Winds, it makes your enemy’s hit rating drop from 5 or 5.5% to just 0.5% which is absolutely not a small thing. Good against rogues, warriors, hunters…
MACROS
#showtooltip Counterspell
/stopcasting
/cast [mod:shift,target=focus] Counterspell
/cast [nomod] Counterspell
With this macro, you are targeting one enemy but silencing the other one without changing your target. Extremely useful in arenas.
If you press this macro on the assigned keybind, it will counterspell your target. If you click Shift + that same keybind, it will counterspell your focus target.
—-----------------------------------
#showtooltip Deep Freeze
/stopcasting
/cast [target=focus] Deep Freeze
This stops your casting and uses Deep Freeze on your focus target.
—-----------------------------------
#showtooltip
/cast Frostbolt(Rank 1)
/petattack
#showtooltip
/cast Frostbolt(Rank 16)
/petattack
When you cast Frostbolt, your pet attacks your target.
—-----------------------------------
#showtooltip
/cast Ice Block
/cancelaura
You must use this macro to enter and cancel Ice Block. You use it when the enemy starts to heal itself or other similar situations.
—-----------------------------------
#showtooltip
/cast [nopet] Summon Water Elemental
/stop macro [nopet]
/petpassive
/click PetActionButton5
Instantly summons your pet and you can use its spell on the same button.
—-----------------------------------
#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/cast [mod:shift, target=focus] Polymorph
/cast [nomod] Polymorph
Same macro as Counterspell. I showed it in the same video. Polymorphs your focus target while targeting another enemy.
IMPORTANT SPELLS
Icy Veins and engineering glove enchantment for a haste rating boost.
Cold Snap resets all your frost CDs(Ice Block, pet, Frost Nova).
Blink teleports you forward. You can break stuns with Blink.
If you hit Counterspell while the enemy is casting, you will make him unavailable to cast for 8 seconds. But if it misses, you will just silence them for 4 seconds(with improved talent).
Polymorph is one of the most annoying and strongest spells in the game. It can be frustrating. Damage will break the effect. You can use Poly and Spellsteal all buffs from enemies. Also, you can heal yourself with Evocation.
Against warriors, you can use Poly to heal yourself. Fake cast a damage spell and when he activates Spell Reflect, cast Polymorph.
Spellsteal steals buffs from enemies. Combine it with Poly before the fight.
Also, you can steal HoTs from druids and heal yourself and make their heals useless.
Don’t forget to use Frost and Fire Ward for damage absorption against shamans, warlocks, mages and warriors because of Spell Reflect.
GAMEPLAY
VS ROGUES
Try to reveal him with some of your AOE spells. If he starts with Cheap Shot, you can either wait for Kidney Shot or Blink instantly. If you blink on Cheap Shot, he will Shadowstep and Kidney Shot so you need to be ready to freeze ASAP.
Always keep your Barrier up. It’s important that if they break the barrier, they get frozen(talent). Also, keep eye on his Shadow Dance spell so you can Ice Block to avoid abnormal damage.
When he uses Cloak of Shadows, it’s nearly impossible to hit a spell, so your main goal is to use shields and blink so you can survive. As soon as Cloak disappears, instantly Frost Nova and Deep Freeze. It can be followed by Poly to force his trinket.
Trinket the Blind and open with rank 1 Frostbolt to get stacks or eventually freeze the target. Also, don’t forget to use Icy Veins and gloves enchant so you can cast faster.
Chain him up with a silence so he can’t Shadowstep.
VS RET PALADINS
With paladins, always try to open with Poly, then Spellsteal all his buffs so he must waste half of his mana rebuffing.
If he uses Repentance, don’t trinket. When he stuns, you just Blink away.
While running, you can keep dispelling his buffs.
Cancel Ice Block as soon as you can see him casting heal and then Counterspell him.
Always try to Spellsteal his Hand of Freedom.
I’m OOM, so freeze him or Poly and start Evocation.
VS ARMS WARRIORS
Poly and keep distance. Be extremely careful with their Spell Reflect but also keep Frost Ward on.
Warriors are tough because they have 2 charges, so be ready to Blink first and then freeze him at the second charge.
You can’t CC him while he’s doing Bladestorm, so save Ice Block this. They can also break your Ice Block with a Shattering Throw.
Don’t forget that you can Poly yourself with Spell Reflect so you can heal up.
VS ROGUES WITHOUT ICE BLOCK
When a rogue opens with Garrote, you can’t Blink. But don’t panic, just keep your shield up. You won’t die in 4 seconds.
Freeze, make distance and then Poly. He already used Cloak of Shadows.
Wait for the stun to expire. Instantly Deep Freeze, make small movements and do Frostbolt + Silence so he can’t Shadowstep.
SOME RBG’S
When fighting with 2 guys, always try to keep one of them CCed.
Always open with that rank 1 Frostbolt because of the short cast time.
Focus healer and try to steal Bloodlust.
With hunters, you have to get in their melee range and freeze them so they can’t shoot. It’s hard but you have to practice. You have silence, Frost Nova, pet freeze, Poly…
Dispel healers. Make sure to KO with silence on 15-20% HP.
